The North Springs Home and Garden Club Curb Appeal Squad was driving through our neighborhood at the end of August. This very hot and dry Summer has been been a challenge to homeowners. We would all like to be doing some dancing in the rain these days. Does anyone know a good rain dance?
The home owner’s yard that drew our attention this time was that of Jim and Debbie Lawler at 813 Cold Branch Drive. The first thing that caught our eyes was that it had recently been mowed on the diagonal. Then our eyes moved to the abundance of red and yellow lantanas in front of the house and red geraniums on the steps. Now for the rest of the story.
Jim and Debbie moved from Virginia to North Springs in 1996 with their son Jonathan(9) and daughter Leanna(12). They have both been active in our neighborhood and in their church.
And now over 20 years later Jim is retired from BCBS and Debbie is approaching retirement from Baptist Hospital. With his retirement Jim has found time to volunteer more and give his front yard a total makeover. Earlier this year he removed a Bradford Pear tree and a River Birch tree from their front yard, put down sod, and replaced some overgrown shrubs. So we, the lantanas, and the geraniums are all enjoying the difference more sunshine makes.
Our second place winners this summer are Donald and Jeanelle Swaney at 217 Cold Branch.
The front yard had been recently mowed, weeded, and trimmed. It all looked so inviting.
The winners were awarded special certificates of appreciation and Woodley’s Garden Center gift cards worth $80 and $40.
In a few weeks the Curb Appeal Squad will be cruising through the neighborhood looking at
Halloween lights and decorations. It’s a fun holiday where families can get a little silly and scary at the same time.
Happy Fall ya’ll.
